JOB SUMMARY:
The Mission of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA)is to educate and graduate officers and leaders of honor and integrity who are dedicated to serving the economic and defense interests for the United States in our Armed Forces and Merchant Marine and who will contribute to an intermodal transportation system that effectively ties America together.
This position is located in the Department of Public Works, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. Midshipmen in residence at the Academy number approximately 1,000. The physical plant of the Academy consists of over 82 acres of grounds, over 40 buildings and structures (over 900,000 square feet of floor space) consisting of administration buildings, officers' residences, officers' club, library, classrooms, chapel, museum, midshipmen residence buildings, dining facility, cafeteria, uniform issuance facilities, retail store, book store, athletic buildings and fields, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, grandstands, parking areas, piers, floats, gangways, garage with over 30 motor vehicles of all types, two steam heating generating plant systems, hot water heating generating plant system, greenhouse, various shops used for maintenance, repair and fabrication of parts and units, and cultivated lawns, shrubs, hedges, and flower beds. In addition, the Academy provides administrative space for several tenant operations from other Government agencies.
This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced Electrician at the Journeyman level with the skill and abilities to install, maintain, and repair electric wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels and outlet boxes as well as a wide variety of electrical fixtures, tools and appliances.

DUTIES:
* Responsible for independently planning, laying out, and carrying out work assignments with minimum supervision.
* Installs and operates a variety of electrical systems, circuits, controls and equipment.
* Plans, lays out, and completes installation, modification and repair of various systems, circuits, equipment and controls.
* Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineer drawings, and the use of formulas basic to the trade to calculate common properties, e.g. voltage, voltage drop and current capability.
* Uses hand tools and a variety of test equipment such as wire cutters and strippers, drills, soldering irons, screwdrivers, test meters, test lamps, voltmeters, ampmeters, wattmeters and ohmmeters.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.
LEVEL To qualify, your experience should include experience equal or equivalent to the following:
WAGE GRADE 10
Experience at the journeyman level as an Electrician without normal supervision to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, modify, trace and locate defects, loading testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
* Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
* Overtime/Shift/Weekend/Holiday work required.
* Must be able to handle objects/equipment averaging 40 pounds in weight.
* Must possess a current and valid state operator's motor vehicle license and an acceptable driving record.
