  • Overview

    The Retail Shop is part of the customer experience and a profit center at the Schwarzman Building. It is a one-of-a-kind store featuring books as well as book related gifts, paper, accessories, and more and more branded proprietary merchandise. The Senior Sales Associate is the face of the Library to hundreds of thousands of visitors. He/She shares knowledge of the store’s vast inventory as well as of the Library (a sales representative is asked as many questions as a person working the Information desk). As the Senior Sales Associate is working for a profit center, i.e. The Library Shop, all functions and policies associated with the smooth running of a five million dollar retail business are essential as well.


    • Engages customer with product knowledge
    • Maintains and restocks floor inventory and sends overflow items to be backstocked
    • Resets displays and maintains visual standards of shop
    • Communicates store policies effectively and graciously
    • Operates the POS system and checks out customers as required
    • Participates in the staffing of after-hours events and talks
    • Provides exceptional customer service by engaging with the customers in the store to sell items and assist with their needs
    • Multitasks between cash register, stocking, and customer service depending on the customer traffic flow

    Required Education & Experience

    Bachelor’s degree, or significant work experience in a book, museum or gift shop


    • Visual memory, must be able to get to know and sell merchandise of the shop
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Detail oriented with an aptitude for organizing and maintaining inventory
    • Self starter and ability to prioritize without supervision
    • Works well with a team
    • Superb customer service
    • Thrives on a hectic, fast-paced environment

    Physical Duties

    Standing for the duration of a shift (up to 7 hours)

    Light lifting, up to 20 pounds


    8 hour shifts between 9 - 6:30 during shop hours
